It’s a common question. Why should I bother voting? It happens in every election that takes place here in Loughborough and the wider world. The Executive Elections are different however, they can end up affecting so much of your Loughborough Experience from the top down.

Candidates have and possibly still will be campaigning round halls and campus, giving every ounce they have to get elected into office for the 2017-18 academic year. Now whilst having your door knocked down by 21 different people or being subjected to inane amounts of sugar for 10 days may not be your personal preference, these students are making sure you’re aware of something they are immeasurably passionate about. And to win your votes is vital to their ambition to make your experience better by letting them put their ideas into practice.

Another point to note however is just how much the Executive Elections can affect YOU and you may not even be aware of it. Every member of the LSU Executive has a different role in making sure you have the #1 student experience this University is renowned for. Whether it be the officer for education making sure the academics you see almost every day are upholding university standards, the media officer making sure you have the opportunity to view, listen or watch whatever happens within the union, all the way across to the sport officer making sure you have the chance to be part of the most successful sporting legacy in the world. These students are campaigning to make sure the excellent experience they’ve received throughout their time here is passed onto you.

The final reason you should vote, is because you get to decide who ends up leading your students’ union. Only you have the opportunity to vote for the people you’d like to take office. Just as with hall committees, department committees, sport committees. All these candidates want you to vote for them, and to hold that decision within your own hands is something pretty special.

Voting is such a simple and effective way to make sure you’re having a say in how you want the experience to run. You may not use every aspect of the union, but someone you know might. Even making sure you’re assisting them by picking someone that will do the best for them is incredibly useful. And you never know when you might end up participating in something here at LSU. Make sure you vote, and make sure that you as students are helping us, help you.
